Following the success of the 2023 and 2024 editions of Retreat for Women in Applied Mathematics (RWAM), ICMS is delighted to announce the return of RWAM for 2025. Registration is now open and full details can be found here.
Participants in RWAM 2024 were very generous with their feedback
It was lovely to have an agenda with plenty of "edge" - space for having more informal conversations, sparked by what had come up in the sessions. Having been to various conferences where the agenda has been packed, it was thoroughly refreshing to be at an event that was not rushed and hectic!
What was the highlight of the workshop?
Meeting all the other attendees and having a space where women were supporting women. It felt like a lot more inviting and warm environment to present work in.
The round tables. There I have learnt more about academia in the UK and alternatives such as KTN and the Smith institute. Also, this was the time I felt most inspired. These sessions contributed massively to both my personal development and my maturity as a researcher. Furthermore, they helped me grow as a mentor, showing me how I can be more effective and supportive with the younger people (teenagers, UG & PG students, friends) I am supporting.
The size of the group is perfect, and the time for networking is also great. It allowed me to get to know almost all the participants. I also think that the topics for the round tables were pertinent and I appreciate the honesty and openness of the speakers.
Why a woman-only event is good idea:
I felt that it was useful that only female participants were present as it allowed discussion to be more open and made it a lot easier to introduce yourself to new people/network. It can often be intimidating to approach new male colleagues in the same way.
The highlight for me was the establishment of a dynamic and supportive environment for women in applied mathematics.
Registration closes on 11 October. Some funding is available and prioirity witll be given to UK-based ECRs.
