SMSTC: Supporting Postgraduates Who Teach Mathematics and Statistics

 11 Mar 2022
1000 GMT

ICMS, Bayes Centre, 47 Potterrow Edinburgh

 Enquiries

This was a free one-day workshop offered in collaboration between SMSTC, ICMS, and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) for postgraduate students who teach mathematics and statistics.
  • Fraser Daly, Heriot-Watt University
  • Alan Peacock, IMA
  • Michael Grove, University of Birmingham

About:

The workshop covered issues such as planning and preparing for teaching, facilitating problem solving classes, encouraging participation and providing support, and assessing student work and providing feedback. One of the sessions allowed participants to discuss any issues, challenges or concerns they may have had in relation to their teaching duties, and allowed an opportunity for them to seek solutions both from fellow delegates and the session facilitator(s), who were experienced higher education teachers of mathematics.

Delivery of this workshop, given its interactive nature, was optimised based upon in-person attendance at the ICMS in Edinburgh. However, delivery took place in a hybrid way to allow a limited number of delegates to participate online.

The workshop was interactive in nature, but a freely available handbook was produced to support these events:

Cox, B. & Grove, M.J. (2012). Teaching Mathematics – a guide for postgraduates and teaching assistants. Birmingham, UK: Maths, Stats & OR Network. Available from https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/Documents/college-eps/college/stem/additional/Teaching-Mathematics.pdf.
