Napier 400 - Numerical Algorithms and Intelligent Software Symposium

 02 Apr 2014

ICMS, 15 South College Street Edinburgh

About:

John Napier was born in Edinburgh and lived and worked there. Our meeting was part of a series of events in 2014 coordinated by the Royal Society of Edinburgh to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Napier's discovery of logarithms - Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio (1614) - and follows on from the last celebration held in 1914!

Speakers:

  • Martin Gander, University of Geneva - From Lagrangian Mechanics to Optimal Control and PDE Constraints

  • Mike Giles, University of Oxford - Computing Logarithms and Other Special Functions

  • Nick Higham, University of Manchester - The Matrix Logarithm: from Theory to Computation

  • Hilary Weller, University of Reading - Numerics for Weather and Climate Forecasting on Modern Computers

  • Jacek Gondzio, University of Edinburgh - The Logarithmic Barrier Function and Interior Point Methods for Optimization

Sponsors and Funders:

The meeting is sponsored by the Centre for Numerical Algorithms and Intelligent Software.
