Elmer Rees 1941-2019
ICMS was very sad to hear of the death of Professor Elmer Rees following a long illness. The ICMS owes its very existence to the remarkable work of Professor Rees to see the Centre established in Edinburgh in 1990. Rees had a distinguished career as a mathematician with positions at Hull, Oxford, Princeton and Swansea before spending 26 years at the University of Edinburgh. After his retiral from Edinburgh he moved to the University of Bristol in 2005 to take up the directorship of the new Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research. Rees was a past member of the ICMS Programme Committee and a tireless advocate for the Centre. He was awarded a CBE in 2009 for his services to the mathematical community.
