Tropical geometry is an emerging area at the interface between algebraic geometry and polyhedral combinatorics, with deep connections to many branches of pure and applied mathematics. It is geometry over the tropical semiring, where multiplication is replaced by addition, and addition is replaced by minimum. This turns algebraic varieties into piecewise linear objects, which allows an infusion of new techniques into algebraic geometry. Applications of tropical geometry include mathematical biology, dynamical systems, and mirror symmetry.

This workshop will bring together leaders in the field, young researchers and mathematicians entering the area.  Tropical geometry has attracted impressive postgraduate students, and it is expected that a quarter of the participants will be postgraduate students or junior postdocs. An afternoon of the workshop will feature a poster session with presentations by these junior participants.  Each day will feature three hour long talks by leading experts. There will also be an open problem session to record the new directions that have arisen during the workshop.

Arrangements

Participation
A limited number of places on this workshop are open for application, and there is some funding available for junior participants. If you would like to be considered for one of these places please use this application form. All other participants and speakers will receive an invitation email directly from ICMS.

Venue
The workshop will be held at ICMS, 15 South College Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9AA. All lectures will be held in the Newhaven Lecture Theatre.. Follow this link for a map showing the location of 15 South College Street, or this map may also prove useful. Invited speakers can either bring talks on a memory/usb stick or laptop.

UK Visas
If you are travelling from overseas you may require an entry visa. A European visa does not guarantee entry to the UK. Please use this link to the UK Visas site to find out if you need a visa and if so how to apply for one.

Travel
Information about travel to the UK and Edinburgh is available here.  Please note that it is your responsibility to have adequate travel insurance to cover medical and other emergencies that may occur on your trip.

A taxi directly from the airport will cost approximately 15.00 to 20.00 GBP to the city centre for a one-way journey.     There is also a bus service direct from the airport to the city centre which will cost 3.50 single or 6.00 GBP return - the Airlink 100.  This is a frequent service (every 10 minutes during peak times) and will bring you close to Waverley Railway Station and the workshop venue.

Lothian buses charge £1.40 for a single, £3.50 for a day ticket. Please note that the exact fare is required and no change is given.

If travelling by train, please note that Edinburgh has two railway stations; Waverley Railway Station being the main station and closest to the workshop venue at 15 South College Street. If you alight at Edinburgh Waverley, the workshop venue is an easy 10 minute walk over North and South Bridge. The second railway station is called Haymarket and is at the West End of the city centre.

Accommodation
If your invitation included the offer of accommodation, then ICMS will arrange this and details will be in your letter of invitation. ICMS has reserved rooms for all delegates in University of Edinburgh en suite accommodation. All accommodation is no more than a twenty minute walk from ICMS. Please indicate on your booking form if you wish to take up the offer of these rooms or make your own arrangements.

Meals and Refreshments
Morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided on each day of the workshop.

A buffet lunch will be provided at ICMS in the Chapterhouse on the ground floor of 15 South College Street on Monday.
The workshop dinner will take place on Thursday.
The workshop grant will cover the cost of this catering.

Registration Fee and Financial Matters
A registration fee of £50 is payable by all speakers and participants. This can be paid by completing the details on this credit/debit card payment form.  As email is not secure, please print the form and return it by fax using the fax number at the top of the form.   ICMS will take your payment and a receipt will be given to you at Registration.  Alternatively, we can accept sterling cheques, made payable to Heriot-Watt University but sent to Catherine McDonald, ICMS, 15 South College Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9AA.  If you have any difficulty in paying in advance, please email Catherine McDonald (email address below).
