Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh are holding a problem scoping workshop to discuss some key areas of interest in European Flood Hazard Management. The workshop will also discuss the evolving management challenges identified in order to address the proposed impacts from such, as yet unknown, operational factors as climate change and increased urbanisation. The workshop will be of interest to Engineers, Mathematicians, Management and Social Scientists from Heriot-Watt University (HWU) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE), in addition to key members from the industrial and environmental sectors and (possibly) other Academic institutes from the United Kingdom.

The workshop will focus on the discussion of two inter-related, challenging, real world case study problems which have been identified as part of an ongoing, trans-national, European project, namely, Strategic Alliance for Integrated Water Management Actions (SAWA). The case studies, which are representative of similar problems throughout the EU, are each of significant interest to such diverse research areas as Stochastic Optimisation, Artificial Neural Network development, Fuzzy Adaptive Systems, Environmental Management, Stakeholder Engagement and Real Time Control.

It is anticipated that the outcome of the workshop will be the development of the foundations of strong relationships between academics and practitioners which will result in the solution of the problems – either in the short term, or by securing additional funding.

The workshop will be lead by HWU in partnership with UoE and will follow the format given below in the preliminary programme.

The workshop is hosted by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) and is supported by Bridging the Gaps funding.
