Why not maths?
An LMS Girls in Mathematics day
10.00 – 14.45, Tuesday 25 September 2018
International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, The Bayes Centre, 47 Potterrow, Edinburgh EH8 9BT
Find out what makes maths beautiful
An inspiring and exciting day of activity designed to encourage S4-S5 girls to pursue mathematics at university level and beyond. Through a varied programme of popular maths lectures, problem solving and group activities this event will show girls the benefits, beauty and joy of mathematics.
Using a range of engaging activities the girls will be introduced to the beauty of university mathematics, and shown some of the exciting applications of mathematics. In discussions with each other, the speakers and role models participants will be able to explore the many opportunities that come with a degree in the mathematical sciences.
Lunch will be provided and there will be time and space for informal conversations. Role models (current undergraduate and graduate students, mathematics graduates and mathematics professionals) will be on hand throughout the day to lead discussions and offer insight in to why they chose to pursue mathematics.
The popular maths lectures will be given by Christina Cobbold (University of Glasgow) and Ineke de Moortel (St Andrews). Christina’s talk will be “Do sheep cheat? A peek into the world of mathematical biology”
About our speakers:
- Christina Cobbold is a reader in applied mathematics at the University of Glasgow. She is a mathematical biologist who uses mathematics to understand the biological processes that shape population dynamics, with a particular interest in host-pathogen systems.
- Ineke De Moortel is a professor of applied mathematics at the University of St Andrews and president of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. Her research is all about solar physics, and in particular about making mathematical models of the sun's corona.
The day is hosted by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh and the Department of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University. The event is supported by a grant from the London Mathematical Society.
The event is free of charge, but open to school groups only. Places must be pre-booked using this registration form https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/L6KUN/ . Schools are welcome to bring up to five pupils each, plus accompanying teachers. All student groups must be accompanied by at least one supervising member of staff. If this will be a problem for your group please contact us. It is expected that this event will be extremely popular, and early booking is recommended. Places will be given on a first come, first served basis.
There is money available to help contribute towards travel costs, particularly for schools which are a considerable distance from Edinburgh. Please note that only state-funded schools are eligible for this money. Please indicate on the registration form if you require financial support.
