180th European Study Group with Industry

2 Apr 2024

Study groups are a popular knowledge exchange activity in the mathematical sciences. These are multi-day workshops where academics work collaboratively towards practical solutions to real challenges. At the start of the study group, several industry partners present challenges they are currently facing. The participants then split into teams and work intensively towards solving these challenges, with each team delivering a presentation on their progress at the end of the study group.

The European Study Groups with Industry (ESGI) started in Oxford in 1968 and there are now several workshops held annually across Europe, with the UK hosting one every year. ESGI is well-established and internationally recognised, and these study groups attract mathematical scientists from a wide range of backgrounds and career stages, from PhD students to professors.

The University of Birmingham will host ESGI 180 from 24-28 June 2024.

Registration is now open and will close on 30 April 2024. Please click here for more information, and contact esgi180@contacts.bham.ac.uk if you have any questions.

The call for challenge holders is also currently open. If you are from business, industry or government, or know of any organisations that might be interested in proposing a challenge, the organising committee would be delighted to hear from you. You can get in touch by emailing esgi180@contacts.bham.ac.uk to informally discuss your ideas.

As an additional incentive to participate in this particular ESGI, the UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences (KE Hub) is supporting a pilot scheme to co-fund some of the best ideas that come out of the study group. The KE Hub anticipates the scheme will provide matched funding to support an early career researcher to continue working on the challenge for a few months beyond the workshop.
