GIFTS & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

It was a most exciting occasion when presented ICMS with a collection of antiquarian books during the Tumour Growth workshop reception. Professor Boag recalled fondly how he had bought the books over a number of years after scouring the second-hand bookshops. The collection includes:
I Newton The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy In Two Volumes Translated into English by Andrew Motte (Benjamin Motte, London 1729)
I Newton Universal Arithmetick, or a Treatise of Arithmetical Composition and Resolution Translated by Messrs Ralphson and Cunn (W Johnston, London 1769)
J - L Lagrange Théorie des Fonctions Analytiques (Courcier, Paris 1813)
S D Poisson Traité de Mécanique In Two Volumes (Bachelier, Paris 1833)
There is no doubt that these books will provide an inspiration for visiting mathematicians.

Participants at ICMS workshops are now watched by a portrait of Professor P G Tait, painted by an eminent Glasgow artist, Harrington Mann (1897), which hangs on the conference room wall. Professor Tait was a life long friend and collaborator of James Clerk Maxwell and Lord Kelvin and his portrait complements those of James Clerk Maxwell and his family. Professor Tait's portrait was donated to the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation by Jans Hogel, the Consul of Denmark, and his wife Carol.

ICMS is most grateful to a number of people and organisations who have donated gifts, in particular Cambridge University Press, John Wiley & Son, and Oxford University Press, who have donated new books for the library.
