Grid Adaptation in Computational PDEs:
Theory and Applications

1st-5th July 1996, Edinburgh, Scotland

Updated on 12 July.

The Conference and One Day Meeting

The conference and meeting were organised by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), with the aim of bringing together theoreticians and practitioners in the field of grid adaptation in PDEs to present and discuss new results and trends. The meeting consisted of a day of expository seminars given by some of the main speakers, followed by a series of invited and contributed sessions.

The main speakers were:

M. Baines (UK) R. Bank (USA) M. Berzins (UK)
J. Flaherty (USA) L. Formaggia (Italy) C. Johnson (USA)
J. Lang (Germany) K. Morgan (UK) R. Russell (Canada)
J. Saltzman (USA) J. Verwer (Netherlands) N. Weatherill (UK)

Speaker in one-day meeting, 1st July.

Papers and Proceedings

We solicited contributed papers for the meeting in all areas of the implementation, analysis and application of adaptive grid techniques for PDEs. Details of the contributed and invited talks can be found below. The abstracts will be expanded to include links to preprints, home pages and software where appropriate.

The proceedings have been published in a special issue of Applied Numerical Mathematics, V26, Numbers 1-2, January 1998.

The scientific committee were:
M. Baines (UK) M. Berzins (UK) J. Flaherty (USA) P. Deuflhard (Germany)
L. Formaggia (Italy) K. Morgan (UK) J. Verwer (Netherlands) N. Weatherill (UK)

Local organisation was by the ICMS and D.B. Duncan of the Department of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Venue

The conference venue was Edinburgh, capital city of Scotland. Edinburgh usually enjoys beautiful weather in July, with long summer evenings and a lively and interesting programme of activities for visitors. The old part of the city (near the conference venue) has just been designated a World Heritage Site. Extensive information on the city and places to visit can be found here.
